Design Museum Magazine Cover

I photographed the newest cover of Design Museum magazine! I had the pleasure of working with Amy Heymans, the CEO of Mad*Pow, a strategic design consultancy in Boston. Watch her HXR 2016 Design For Change talk on Empathy and Purpose here.

Amy was a pleasure to work with. We took photos inside her fun and colorful office. The cover though, we ended up shooting in her building’s hallway. I generally don’t like photographing people up against brick walls, but thought if I lit Amy well enough and let the light fall off behind her, the wall would blur into a slightly dark texture.

Most of my portrait sessions don’t allow for more than twenty minutes, so I was thrilled that Amy gave me as much time as I needed. I start my session off with a close up face portrait, as seen on the cover, then change locations once I feel I captured her essence. There were three locations we shot in, all with just one light! A single diffused umbrella is my go-to. Thank you for standing in, Amy! It was wonderful to collaborate and to see the empire you’ve built! My hat is off to you! Of course, many thanks to Sam and the folks at the Design Museum for bringing me in for this one! It’s almost a decade I’ve been working with him and the DMB. Whoa!
