A basement done right. I fell in love with these shelves and the lounge vibe this space provides. Captured with two strobes and one reflector to bounce the light back into the dark tones. I layered in darker exposures so the texture can show in the white fabric. Otherwise, it would have been blown out! Can’t tell, right? Swipe to see the other angles. While I love styling and capturing wide angle architectural photos, the details of a space are what grab me. I feel they help support and show the full story. My approach to capturing the details is to have the mindset as if I am taking a portrait of them. Lighting choice, angle and composition. Everything is worthy of being photographed, especially when it was something that required a lot of time to get created. Here is a few snaps from a home I shot for @mgdplus.

A beautiful old mill building in Newton I captured for @krausassociates. There were so many spaces inside there and I found myself getting lost quite a bit! I spent the last week working 12+ hour days getting our Florida home ready for the market. There were some sad moments combing through all of my dad’s belongings and finding relics from our childhood. I could feel this chapter ending and the next one beginning, which I found somewhat therapeutic. A cleansing of the past helps create more space to build rich memories ahead. We cleaned, power washed, painted, landscaped, packed, staged the house and took pictures. It’s the first time I’ve styled and shot photos of a home I’ve had so many fond memories in. It’s bittersweet really. While we hit it fast and hard, I’m happy with the work we put into it and how all of my pictures came out.

Here are pictures from the most fun shoot I’ve done in years. For @samueladamsbeer I captured a few people from the LGBTQ community in their company for a National Coming Out Day campaign. We had the music blasting, strobes firing, and an upbeat and happy vibe. It was the first portrait campaign shoot of 2020 where the clients, talent and myself were all in the same space together. It made all of us appreciative.
🔸
As our country embarks on a new path today, I am looking forward to people being able to express who they truly are without any fear. I hope to witness more love, understanding, compassion and grace from our collective whole. Swipe to see more snaps from this shoot. Here are stills from my newest video. My hometown of Lakeville is 18% water has endless cranberry bogs. I shot this while my friend Dan was visiting for the holidays. We hit some old stomping grounds and had meaningful conversations while doing so. I created the music that accompanies the short video. Link can be can be found on my youtube page: youtube.com/user/bengebo. What should I photograph and make a video of next with my drone?

Today would have been my father's 67th birthday. It's only been a few months since his passing and I found more of him inside me than I ever knew. When I think of Dave Gebo, what first comes to mind is his wisdom, values, strong character, love for those around him and his sincere laugh. He cared for my brother and I so deeply and I try to keep him alive through my actions. Be nice to everyone and work hard. That's what he taught me and it's those simple actions that have given me the life and community I have cultivated. Thinkering, gardening and fixing things are the activities I find help still keep him close to me.
🔸
His death has strengthened my desire to truly be the best version of myself I can be. I have chosen to surround myself with others who help me stretch the days, lose track of time, make me laugh and enable me to flourish. Since his passing, I have found myself desiring to create, travel and build upon meaningful relationships more than I ever have. We had some of his remains made into these beautiful stones (swipe to see). Wherever I travel he can now join me in taking in the sights. Thanks, Dave, for all the love and hope you've given me and those around you.

How I rang in 2021. Dan and I built an effigy to officially burn away the year that was. Thanks to Dan for doing most of the work. Drone shots from my last day with family for Christmas. It was my dad’s favorite holiday and it’s painful to not celebrate it with him. While there was a low level hum of sadness throughout the week, giving my undivided attention to those who I am close to heals some of the pain. Our birth was “Action!” and our death, the credits. It’s our story to tell and we pick the characters. This is was my last camping spot of 2020. A wonderful weekend along the ocean in Freeport with a few beautiful souls. We had three campsites that took over a little peninsula in one corner of the campground. It was all ours. We walked far when the tide was out, shared stories and saw shooting stars. We had a surplus of firewood and food that kept our spirits high as we laughed through the night against a raging fire. As we welcomed in the solstice that night, deep down I knew this would be the last weekend of freedom in nature before the cold weather entered and darker days approached. This trip was the last celebration after months of hiking, camping, swimming and biking all over. In times of great joy with others is when the immediate moment should be noticed, cherished and commented on. We could die tomorrow. Don’t let fear freeze you from telling your truth or feeling pain.
🔸
Since Burning Man didn’t happen this year, I had to get some use out of all my burner supplies. Until the warmer days come in the Spring, I am using my time to recover, read, learn, love, grow and be thankful for all that I’ve been given. 🙏🏽

While coping with loss, seeing old photography friends of mine has been restorative and healing. I went to @nesop_boston with @annakwalshphotography and @samquinnstuff roughly ten years ago. When embarking on a new career, sharing experiences and ideas with others whom I’ve learned the trade with has been more helpful and valuable than I could have imagined. When we get together we reminisce for sure, but the true joy is hearing what still stokes the creative fires inside of us. It’s a solid reminder than my decisions have been correct which grants me the courage to push beyond my own boundaries. While all relationships should be cherished, most of which should be the oldest ones because that trust has been tested. Photography is therapy.

My father David Gebo has passed away. He was selfless, fearless, giving, thoughtful and so very loving. Having lost both parents has left me feeling sad, lost, confused, weak, but fully loved. I learned kindness and compassion from my mother and acts of service and respect from my father. Both built a healthy foundation in which my brother Ken and I flourished upon. We were treated like adults early, shown support, respect, and above all shown attention.
🔸
My father has battled more health issues than any person I had ever known and he never complained once. He only worried about how his problems affected others. A truly altruistic man that loved his family and friends. He is where I got my strength, resilience and grace from.
🔸
When my mother suffered a severe stroke when I was 15, he dedicated the next six years of his life to her until she eventually passed away. I have never witnessed love displayed in such a true way. It was a testament to his character and love for my mother. It showed that true love requires sacrifice.
🔸
Soon after I moved to Boston to attend photography school he met a beautiful soul in Peggy. I am so fortunate to still have her. Peggy, my brother and the rest of my small family will all continue to grow, appreciate life and just be together.
🔸
The last time we talked was on my birthday on 9/27 and “I love you” were the last words we exchanged. I am fortunate in knowing almost everything I wanted to say, express and do for my dad I have already done. There are no regrets, but the pain is striking. To grieve is to be human and I feel so alive as much as I might want to crawl in a hole for awhile.
🔸
Love is the thumbprint of divinity upon our biology. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it and join the dance. I want to thank my father for giving me strength, encouragement to be my weird self, showing me anything is possible, never limiting me and for giving me the ability to love wholly. I am going to do my best to let his lessons, values, humor and fearlessness live on through my actions. Thank you, Dave. 🖤
All at once Summer collapsed into Fall. Throwback to a few weeks ago on 8/24 when I went camping in a special secret hideaway in Allegheny National Forest. It was voted the second best campsite in the state! We had beach front campfires and enough space to throw a mini-Burn.
🔸
As Summer winds down September rolls on. I have spent more time outdoors this season than any year I can remember. Not having FOMO, tending to the parts of the garden I can touch and spending time with a closer knit group of people, it has allowed me to do what I feel most comfortable doing. Acting like my 9 year old self and having fun with nature with no worries on my back. I will still be leaning hard into outdoor life well into our first snowfall. 🤙🏽

Biking Boston to Cleveland. We’re currently on day five riding the Erie Canal Bike Path. It’s stunning and a true joy to ride this well-maintained route. We’re averaging 85 miles a day. Yesterday we did 105.
🔸
Why am I doing this? A practice of radical self reliance. A focus on self care. True freedom. Realizing how little we actually need. Endorphin rushes. Time to think. Breathwork. Commitment. The closest to feeing like a cowboy. Increasing my levels of patience, tolerance for pain and threshold for discomfort. Oh, and getting to eat everything I want without guilt!
🔸
At a campground we stayed at in Greylock we saw people driving from their campsite to the bathrooms and I laughed my ass off. People can become lazy because their culture enables them. I’m not a genetic freak with abnormal physical abilities, just a normal dude. I believe in stressing the organism and resisting comfort. Eustress is healthy stress. It’s better to create and manage your own hell so you can handle when others give it to you.
🔸
Strength comes from the mind. You can do anything you want to if you let yourself. Through intention, hard work, discipline, persistence and patience I have created the exact life for myself with ultimate freedom. No debt, no boss, little ownership, my passion is my career and I thankfully have a healthy enough body to do nearly anything with. I also don’t believe in backup plans and go all in with everything I do. Enough for now, I got hills to climb. ✌🏽
Taken one year ago today, 8/28/2019. Since my annual pilgrimage has been canceled, I have reimagined the journey with long adventures that rival the physical, mental and spiritual growth I gain when attending Burning Man.
🔸
I am currently still on these adventures and feeling such deep flow and gratitude. The bicycle is tuned, route mostly planned and I’m ready. Hills, rail trails, fire, sweat, endorphins, sunshine, deep thought, big meals, farm lands and time to be. May I be alive to see the end of the world. 🤙🏽

The perfect view while drifting to sleep. I shot this from my campfire a week before 2019 Burning Man. I had a week of hiking, swimming and camping alone before I headed to the desert. A fun shoot on the Charles for the staffing agency @hollister_institute. They wanted to create a new leadership program that embodied their company philosophy. The idea I came up with was to capture earth, fire, water and air for their holistic leadership program.
🔸
I shot 3,000+ photos, worked with 50+ models, in 8+ locations and we had two months of prep time. Organizing six different shoots over four days took a ton of energy and an all hands on deck approach. Three generations. Kenneth, David and Abigail Gebo. After renting an RV and driving down to Florida to visit my father, I couldn’t explain how important it was for me to watch my newborn niece meet my dad. When their eyes first locked it felt like a loop was closed, a torch has been passed and the breath of a new generation was finally visible. In a way, it was a sigh of relief. I am proud of my brother Ken, his wife Whitney, their newborn Abby and my father for all creating life out of love.

Magic is real! Fireflies and star trails were one of the themes last weekend. Photographing fireflies has been a goal of mine for years. I took a road trip seven years ago and failed to stop to take a picture of these friendly creatures in a field in Missouri. I felt regret ever since, but now that goal has been accomplished.

I don’t just photograph people! When I was capturing team portraits for @renovisohome a little while back, one of their office dogs was curious to see what was happening. When he just walked up and planted himself in the chair in between portraits, it was only obvious that I needed to shoot his portrait too! “We've forgotten that a rich life consists fundamentally of serving others, trying to leave the world a little better than you found it. We need the courage to question the powers that be, the courage to be impatient with evil and patient with people, the courage to fight for social justice. In many instances we will be stepping out on nothing, and just hoping to land on something. But that's the struggle. To live is to wrestle with despair, yet never allow despair to have the last word.” - Cornel West

Here is a gorgeous new modern building I photographed for @calare_properties. It was a perfectly sunny and warm day to take exterior photos. Generally, it’s best to capture building right at dusk once the sun sets. That’s not always the case though. Sometimes showing how a building functions when the sun soaks it is when you can see it in its full glory. Time for some Massachusetts history. This is an abandoned roller coaster at Lincoln Park. I went here kid until it closed in the late 80’s. It was eventually torn down in 2012. The most popular ride was the "Monster Ride," where diabolical creatures were plotting your demise from beyond the railways. It featured two paper maché monsters overlooking your entry from the second floor balcony. It has appeared in several newspaper articles. Lincoln Park used to be known as "Midway Park" or "Westport Park" until a new name was chosen in a lottery.
🔸
In 1987 it had a series of accidents which led to its closing. Four months later on September 29, the braking system on the roller coaster failed, causing one of the cars to jackknife. Although no one was injured, this was the final ride of the coaster. The jack-knifed car remained stuck on the roller coaster track well into the 1990s, until vandals tore it off.
🔸
The 42-acre site is currently being considered for a 252-unit housing project. It’s funny how quickly the earth overtakes human-made structures like this one. Captured with an old Nikon D200 at a five minute shutter speed. Rest in pieces, you ol’ hunk of junk.

Throwback to August when I discovered my new quiet place in Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra mountains. I captured this photo on my way to June Lake. Then after that, Burning Man. I was feeling tranquil as I was blasting @kinggizzard in my rented Dodge Charger. After this portion of the trip was completed, I went from nothing but nature, myself and my thoughts to the dust, everyone, and the collective effervescence. It might have been the most epic journey I’ve ever had in my home country. I only have four more states to visit before I’ve explored all 50 in the U.S. Any idea which ones are left on my list? At this point in the year I would have had all my Burning Man prep squared away. Tickets for the airplane, burner express bus and shipping container. My bicycle would be decked out and the tea camp layout would be set. Since the Burn isn’t happening this year, doing something just as memorable and soul healing is my goal. Whether it happens in New England, the desert or on the moon, Labor Day week will be magical. Thoughts on what I should do instead?
🔸
After a day of delivering the mail, meeting brilliant people, holding enlightening conversations, I was given a pass to ride on an airplane anytime I want. I ended up catching the last plane ride of the Burn the following morning. On that flight I met a friendly passenger and new friend @cristina.ariso. Through our connection of zero G’s and some hours relating on philosophy and meaningful books post flight, we remain friends to this day. I’ve used experiences from Burning Man as experiences to apply to my real life to enhance it on all levels.

All seeds grow in darkness. Think about how you’ll feel once we can hug again, have outdoor dinners with friends and new friends, and not be in fear of endangering others. I am thinking of these times as a cloak of darkness that we’ll eventually shed once our compassion and and ingenuity has worn it away. A seed of new growth. For now, I am tending to the parts of the garden I can touch. Who do we want to be when we rise from this? I don’t know yet, but you and I will be more appreciative and have new growth to show.

Looking up when I first visited Louisville many years ago. There was a crazy storm that took out the power of the entire city and sent a tree through the bedroom I was staying in. Those photos and the story of that close call will be for another time, however.

I had a late night with the sirens going nonstop, so I decided to capture the sky with no light pollution. Everything was dark and eerie. Throwback to when I traveled 8,000+ miles in a rental car with two friends for a cross country road trip. My goal was to captured two portraits a day for as long as we were on the road. I stopped this gentleman when we were headed to Mt. Dixie National Forest. It’s funny, out of the 70+ people I photographed only one person denied me. Once people saw my camera and realized I was honest and legit, they opened up and told me their whole story. Approach a stranger in earnest and you’ll be surprised what they’ll reveal. Damn. The idea I came up with was to capture earth, fire, water and air for a new holistic leadership program created by Hollister. 3,000+ photos, 50+ models, 8+ locations and 2 months of prep time. Organizing six separate shoots took a lot of energy and an all hands on deck approach. We shot on the charles river on kayaks, in a farm outside the city, on rooftops, in offices, mediation rooms and kitchens. Production manager and art director @gmwll took the lead on helping find locations and models for the shoots. Big thanks to @trimark_usa and @idbldg for letting us shoot in their baller kitchens. Model @manueljrtarango shown here making a pizza pie 🍕 for us and leading the charge. Fun times collaborating with the design agency Sherman Group. Swipe to see a detail shot of the dough. Alright, I know what I’m making for dinner tonight!

Site plans. With all of the beautiful homes I am lucky enough to photograph, I suppose it all starts inside one of these. Having taken a tech drawing class many years ago, I am sure I only catch a glimpse of the actual work involved. I usually only get to see the end product and know my clients put in a lot of time and sweat into making their projects a reality. So it’s my job to be there for them and let their work shine in the best light possible.

Plants, light and books. That’s about all I really need. Atop the ladder you’ll find a lovely nook to read a book! Swipe left to see where the ladder leads. It’s a special spot where you can hide away and be with your thoughts. A very live-able, quaint home I photographed for the architects @hiselflynn.

I made a new video!
bengebo.com/juggling
During the 2020 quarantine, my friend Drew and I went out for a socially distanced bike ride. We stopped at a park where he taught me how to juggle. I am still awful, but he is unbelievable. I made this short and fun video of him as a thank you. All video, editing and music created by yours truly!
🔸
The trickiest part was trying to sync up the music to the video. I ended up matching the beat to Drew’s hand movements and then cut the video to match the audio transitions. This was my first time ever making something like this and I couldn’t be more inspired to create more. Send me a message and let me know what you think I should film next! Maybe you?

A beautifully designed house and a delightful, quiet backyard I photographed for architects @hiselflynn. I used four strobes with umbrellas and a light form panel to blast “daylight” inside the rooms.
🔸
We had a fifteen minute time window to match the natural light and the strobe power. I spent the first hour getting the six vantage points ready so I could just jump into each spot to shoot when the time was right.
🔸
I generally prefer to take pictures at the crack of dawn. That way we have the rest of the day to shoot once the time sensitive shots are done. Dusk shots can be glorious, but once that light is gone, it’s gone.

Details in a modern and hip home I shot for architects @hiselflynn. This house was in disrepair and they brought it back to life from top to bottom. This is an impromptu vignette I captured in the living room.

Here is another photo I captured inside the offices of @enviroatwork. It was fun collaborating with their ultra friendly and creative team. Their work space is all kinds of feng shui with cooler tones.

For fun, here’s another abstract office scene. This one I shot for @enviroatwork at their home base in Boston. It was a day of capturing the life of the employees in meetings, at their desks and and their “environments at work”.

I captured portraits last Fall in collaboration with my friend Kyle. She interviewed various people off the street about what their super power might be and I captured portraits of them after. What do you think this gentleman’s super power is?

Swipe right to see my ultra minimal lighting setup underneath an E-Z Up tent on a sunny day. This is right up there with a recent shoot I did for @farmacyboston when I photographed smoothies using only a white plastic bag and a black piece of styrofoam. But that’s for another post.

This is what an organic quinoa farm looks like. Photographed circa ‘15 when I was in Peru for a month. Thanks to @gmwll for being my translator and fixer for this fun photojournalism project. Fun fact: Quinoa leaves are the most nutrient dense on the planet, yet very few people eat them.
