Why Do People Cling to Outdated, Poor-Quality Headshots?

It’s a common phenomenon with plenty of explanations. Here are five reasons:

They Hate Having Their Photo Taken.
For many, having their picture taken is an uncomfortable experience. So, when they happen to get a decent snapshot where their face is clear, they hold onto it like it’s the best they’ll ever have. That one photo becomes their go-to image online for years to come. People often believe their headshot from five or ten years ago is "close enough" to their current appearance. While you might recognize yourself in that photo, others may not. As your style, hair, and even facial structure evolve, your professional image should reflect who you are today. Keeping your photo current helps build trust and authenticity in your personal brand.

They Don’t See the Need.
Some people think their work or credentials speak for themselves, making an updated photo unnecessary. While your achievements are critical, your headshot is often the first impression others have of you—especially online. A polished, up-to-date photo can make your profile stand out and convey professionalism before you even speak.

It’s Too Expensive.
Professional photography can feel like an unnecessary cost, especially when there are always other priorities. However, investing in a high-quality headshot is an investment in your career. A professional, up-to-date photo conveys competence and attention to detail, which can make all the difference in networking and job opportunities.

The Timeless Prom Picture.
Some people never outgrow the way they saw themselves at 17. Even as they reach middle age, their headshot reflects their youthful self-image rather than reality. Sure, it might not match what they see in the mirror — or what others see — but who cares? After all, everyone else is doing the same thing! (And if your current headshot is “only” a decade old, don’t think this doesn’t apply to you.)

Finding the Right Photographer Feels Overwhelming.
Life gets busy, and updating your headshot may not feel urgent. However, the longer you put it off, the less representative your image becomes. A new headshot is not just about appearances; it’s about staying relevant in your industry and signaling that you’re engaged and up-to-date in your professional life.

Your headshot is more than just a picture—it’s a visual representation of your personal brand. Whether you’re networking, job hunting, or building an online presence, having an updated photo can make a lasting impression. If it’s been more than two or three years since your last headshot, it’s time to take action.

With proper preparation, styling, lighting and vibe of the photo shoot, a new headshot will be very beneficial. If it’s been more than 2-3 years, or if your appearance has significantly changed, it’s time for a refresh. Similarly, if your current photo no longer aligns with your personal or professional goals, scheduling a new session is a wise move.
